WHITE WATER RAFTING IN CAGAYAN DE ORO

The Ultimate Adventure

I always love adventure. It feels so great to shout and freak out while you feel the intensity of your adrenaline rushing and your heart beats louder.

A good friend of mine (Zerton Dagoc) invited me to visit Cagayan De Oro, also known as the city of Golden Friendship, August of 2012. Though this is not my first time Mindanao trip, as I’ve been in Misamis Occidental before, this is my farthest travel alone in the Philippines so far.

Since Zerton knew that I am an adventurous type of traveler, he offered me a life-threatening activity in CDO. So we took the Advanced white water rafting course offered by Great White Water Rafting

I am very excited to try this one of a kind adventure. Though I am not that good swimmer, I did not hesitate and trust with my life jacket. (haha). Since Zerton is a bit chubby (peace!!!) I can feel he is kinda afraid to shrink (His life jacket might not able to manage his weight lols) But he still tried it as he is the one inviting me for this!

There are 3 courses offer in white water rafting.

1.  Beginner course -  maximum of three hours rapid run on the rushing river.

2.  Advance course - which will take five hours of rapid run.

3.  Extreme course -  for enthusiasts and brave hearted travelers.

Of course before the adventure begin, we undergo Safety Orientation first.

Important Reminders before the Rafting!

 1. Wear your gears properly and at all times.

Life vest and helmet will be provided before the orientation. You can choose for your vest frames and helmet sizes. Vest provided are cool and very safe. It is not the usual vest. It can be strap to your sides and below. It is adjustable to fit exactly on your body figure.

2. Do NOT wear slippers.

Flip flops are big no-no! You’ll just be asked to remove them the entire rafting trip. If you are kinda sensitive and want something protection on your feet, you need a pair of shoes that has straps or those that can be secured. You don’t want to worry yourself with losing your slippers especially when you fall off the raft.

 3. Do NOT attempt to swim when you fall into the water.

Remember, water is strongly rushing and there are stones that cause big rapids. The rapids will always bring and force you according to its direction, so swimming will be a waste of your energy when you fall off the raft. Allow yourself to float and glide through the rapids (just enjoy). Always remember to put your legs up to avoid any stones beneath you. Do not be afraid to fall into the water. Guides are alert. They will automatically jump off from the raft once you fall. He will grab you by your life vest and will glide with you to take away your fear. There will be instances when you will need to stay in the water longer depending on the rapids. Remember to offer your back before the guide pulls you up. It’s easier for you to sit your way into the raft rather than to mimic a climb to pull yourself in.

4. Allow yourself to fall when you get out of balance.

Remember, this is a water adventure. When you find yourself underneath the raft when it flips, bring yourself out by pushing yourself down and pulling yourself up away from the raft. Injuries come from forcing yourself to stay inside the raft when you’re about to fall. (You can jump off advance if you will notice big rapids coming on your way hahahaha!!!)

5. Always Listen to your Guides

The guides are the expert, so listed attentively. They will always remind you of safety measures and will tell you what to do. Besides they are very much cool, loaded with jokes to keep you laughing on your voyage and swallow little water when the raft flips and you fell into the water (hahaha just kidding, but i experienced this LOL)

 6. Do not wear any accessories.

Large necklace, pointed earrings and other may cause harm, so better remove all of those. Besides you’re bound to lose them if you fall into the water.

And after.....adventure begins!

Amazing!!!

Go!!! Go!!! Go!!!

After the FLIP

Push Again!!
Push Harder!!
The Second Flip

It took almost 6 hours floating on the river, and flip with those big rapids. Nothing to worry about pictures, as camera crews will be following you to take awesome shots to make your adventure a memorable one.

On calm water part, I really enjoyed the vibrant view of mountains, the great blue sky above, the sounds of the rushing water and encounter of the wilds. We saw wild birds and snakes!!!

The feeling of excitement and the spirit of adventure comes alive.

If you are a thrill seeker and looking for a one of a kind experience with friends, well this is the best adventure you could ever try in Cagayan. For me this is the BEST adventure I’ve ever experience.

It’s really more FUN IN THE PHILIPPINES.
